The Meaning Behind "Design Your Best Life."
It’s 4am in the morning and I can’t sleep because I’m feeling inspired...and because I have 12 mosquito bites that won’t stop itching...and among the bajillion thoughts currently swirling in my head comes the question, “What does ‘Design your best life’ even mean?”
For those who may not know, I sign off on my YouTube channel with, “Until next time guys, keep designing your best life.” No matter if it’s at the end of a fashion related video, a style video or a wellness video, that’s what I leave all my viewers with.
Why? Well one YouTube tip I came across talked about branding your channel, and having phrases your supporters will know you for down the line. While creating my channel, I kept this in mind. I started out the gate not having anything to use, but it was a nugget of information I kept tucked away so nothing would be forcefully created nor inauthentic.
Like much else, I can’t tell you the exact moment this phrase popped into my head, although I probably could find the first video I used it on. I can tell you why I liked it and why it stuck though.
Through my twenties, I did a lot of self development work and as that decade started rounding out, I came to realize a lot of what we feel and how we act is by choice. But not free choice, more so a reflex choice, where we don’t actively pay attention to the choice being made. The easiest example is breathing, we don’t think about it, we just do it because it keeps us alive. When it comes to an ambitious goal, that would be something like continuing to watch Netflix instead of taking the first action toward your goal. When it comes to a dream like traveling to Greece, it would look like you buying a ton of things off Amazon when you’re supposed to be saving up for your trip. These actions are all self sabotaging behavior but we don’t realize it as such because our brain is trained to do it and it thinks it’s protecting us from a risky unknown thing.
I started to think about if there was nothing in my way, what would I want my life to look like. What would I be doing, where would I be going, what would I be wearing in this life where I am unbelievably happy, beaming and living my best life. (Did the ding go off?)
As a designer, I create things from ideas. I can pull inspiration from anywhere and change out details in order to create the final garment that hopefully triggers whatever feeling I wanted you to feel from the beginning of the process. If it doesn’t work out, I go back with notes and make alterations to the design. Designing your best life works the same way. You pull inspiration from what you might see around you or ahead of you, you change out your actions and processes to create that life that hopefully triggers the happiness you deserve. If it doesn’t, all good. Take your lessons learned, make any alterations you need and continue to design your best life, one that is fulfilling and touches your soul.
That is what “Design your best life” means to me and the path that I’m on where I hope I’m inspiring others to do the same.
So let’s chat. If there was nothing in your way and you could attain your best life tomorrow, what would that look like? Where would you be? Who would you be with? What would you be wearing and what would you be doing? Share in the comments.
